Public Buses in Santorini: What to Expect
The bus system in Santorini, while not the most well-organized, provides a network that connects all major towns and attractions. Operated by KTEL Santorini, this network of intercity buses allows visitors to travel around the island affordably. However, schedules can be inconsistent, and connections through Fira are often required.
Unlike many cities with standardized public transport systems, Santorini’s buses are privately owned, with drivers also acting as operators. This results in variations in bus models, colors, and conditions. Though the buses may not be the newest, they are generally well-maintained and air-conditioned.
As of 2025, there are only 23 public buses on the entire island!
How the Santorini Bus Network Operates
Santorini’s bus routes follow a hub-and-spoke system, with the main bus station in Fira serving as the central point for all journeys. To travel between villages, you often need to transfer at Fira, which can be time-consuming. For example, traveling from Kamari to Perissa, despite the short distance, requires switching buses in Fira.
