Fira to Oia Hiking Adventure
Experience the beauty of Santorini like never before with a scenic hike from Fira to Oia. This iconic path offers breathtaking views of the island’s caldera cliff, beautiful towns including Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Fira, and some of the most picturesque spots you’ll ever see.
The entire route spans just over 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles) and comprises a mix of paved pedestrian streets and rugged dirt trails. For the most enjoyable experience, consider starting your hike early in the morning or evening time, especially during the summer months.
As you pass through the path, you’ll also have the opportunity to see Skaros Rock, a striking outcropping near Imerovigli. Adding this extension to your hike will prolong the journey by an additional 45 to 60 minutes, but the panoramic views from Skaros Rock are well worth the extra effort.

Choose Your Adventure
Fira to Oia or Oia to Fira?
You have the flexibility to choose on the Fira to Oia hike or the reverse journey from Oia to Fira. While we personally walked from Oia to Fira, I believe that starting from Fira offers a more rewarding experience. Here’s why:
Overall Downhill Walk: Walking from Fira to Oia means you’ll mostly be descending (although there are still some uphill sections). This can make the hike feel easier and more enjoyable.
Uninterrupted Views: By starting in Fira, you’ll have the magnificent views of Oia stretched out before you throughout the hike. This allows you to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery without having to turn around constantly.
End in Oia: Arriving in Oia after your hike allows you to spend the remainder of the day exploring this picturesque village. You can wander its charming streets, witness its legendary sunset, and then easily return to your accommodation.

Navigating the Fira to Oia Hiking Route
Starting Point: Fira
The official starting point of the hike is at the Atlantis Hotel in Fira. However, you can kick off your adventure from any point in Fira. Use Google Maps for navigation or simply start exploring from wherever you choose. One of the joys of this hike is the freedom to wander through the towns along the way, so don’t hesitate to modify off the official path if something catches your eye.
To begin, head north from Fira towards Imerovigli. Throughout the hike, keep the sea to your left to ensure you’re moving in the correct direction. While there are occasional trail markers along the walking path, they are spread and not many of them, so rely primarily on the coastline as your guide.
Firostefani
Firostefani is the second town you’ll encounter along the route. It seamlessly blends with Fira, so you may not even realize you’ve entered a different village.
Situated at a higher elevation than Fira, Firostefani offers stunning views, it is requiring an uphill climb to reach. Enjoy the panoramic view before continuing your journey towards Oia.
Exploring Firostefani: Three Bells of Thira
During your time in Firostefani, take a slight detour to visit the Three Bells of Santorini at Agios Theodoros. To reach this viewpoint, head to the parking lot located just east of the church. From here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, offering a memorable stop along your hiking journey from Fira to Oia.

Three Bells of Santorini
IMEROVIGLI
Continue the uphill walk into Imerovigli.

In Imerovigli, you’ll discover numerous pedestrian pathways to explore. You have the option to follow the designated trail markers or simply enjoy wandering and choosing your own path through the town. This allows for a more personalized and adventurous experience as you make your way from Fira to Oia.
Skaros Rock
To reach Skaros Rock, continue along the pedestrian path. When you reach a fork in the trail near Agios Georgios Church, keep left to follow the walking path leading to Skaros Rock.
To access Skaros Rock, you’ll need to descend a series of steps. Along the way, you’ll pass by the Church of Christ. Be careful, especially on windy days, as the winds can be intense here. During our visit, we experienced gusts of over 35 mph.

As you proceed through Imerovigli, you’ll encounter multiple pathways, creating a maze-like experience. However, maintaining a northern direction ensures you stay on track.
After passing Avalon Resort and Spa, the paths merge into a single trail. Follow this unified trail, passing by several resorts and hotels until you reach Profitis Ilias Church.

After reaching Profitis Ilias, you’ll begin a downhill descent for a short distance. Upon reaching the base of the hill, the trail temporarily concludes, requiring a brief walk along the roadside shoulder. This segment spans approximately 150 to 200 meters. Upon passing the small café or snack bar, the trail resumes its course.

The next stretch poses the toughest challenge of the hike, particularly if you’re trekking from Fira to Oia. It involves a steady uphill climb along a rocky, dirt trail. The vistas along this segment may not be spectacular, and the terrain can feel somewhat monotonous. However, once you conquer this ascent and reach the summit, you’ll be treated to our favorite part of the hike: the exhilarating descent into Oia.
Continue your journey along the caldera as you approach Oia. The trail will lead you through a parking lot before guiding you onto a pedestrian walking path, reminiscent of those in Fira and Imerovigli.
